One of the first public art programs in the country, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places was established in 1973 with the passage of an ordinance allocating 1.5% of the capital cost of new county buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks.

The program of 14 new commissions includes a monumentally scaled artwork in the  main lobby by celebrated Miami-based artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, as well as 25 Miami-Dade County and South Florida-based artists in an acquisitions program with over 90 individual artworks lining public areas such elevator lobbies and corridors. Special rotating exhibitions include a large-scale installation of images of Surrounded Islands on long-term loan from the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, and a presentation of the South Florida Cultural Consortium’s Acquisition Program.

ABOUT MIAMI-DADE COUNTY ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

Established in 1973, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places is a program of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, one of the first public art programs in the country. The program was established in 1973 with the passage of an ordinance allocating 1.5% of capital costs of new local government buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks, educational programs and collection maintenance. The Art Trust Fund is administered by a County Commission-appointed citizens board, the Art in Public Places Trust, in consultation with its Professional Advisory Committee.
